Humanrights,democraticsocietiesandsustainabledevelopmentdependonthefreeflowofinformation.Andtherighttoinformationdependsonpressfreedom.Eachyear,weobserveWorldPressFreedomDaytoemphasizethesefundamentalprinciples,toprotecttheindependenceofthemediaandtohonourmediaworkerswhoriskandhavelosttheirlivesintheexerciseoftheirprofession.
人权、民主社会和可持续发展有赖于信息的自由流动。知情权取决于新闻自由。我们每年纪念世界新闻自由日，是要强调这些基本原则，保护媒体的独立性，向那些为从事自己的职业而冒着生命危险、乃至牺牲生命的媒体工作者致以敬意。
Thisyear,WorldPressFreedomDaycoincideswiththreeimportantmilestones.Itisthethanniversaryoftheworld’sfirstfreedomofinformationlaw,coveringbothmodern-daySwedenandFinland,anditisthe25thanniversaryoftheadoptionoftheWindhoekDeclarationofpressfreedomprinciples.Finally,isalsothefirstyearofimplementingtheSustainableDevelopmentGoals.
今年，世界新闻自由日恰逢三个重要的里程碑。今年是世界上第一个新闻自由法出现周年，这项法律涵盖今天的瑞典和芬兰。今年也是关于新闻自由原则的《温得和克宣言》通过25周年。最后，年还是执行可持续发展目标的开局之年。
PressfreedomandthefreeflowofinformationarenecessarynotonlytoinformcitizensabouttheGoals,buttoenablethemtoholdtheirleadersaccountableforfulfillingthepledgestheyhavemade.Themedia–including,andincreasingly,newonlinemedia–serveasoureyesandears.Weallbenefitfromtheinformationtheyprovide.
新闻自由和信息的自由流动是必要的，这不仅表现在让公民了解这些目标，而且表现在让公民能够就领导人履行所作的承诺对他们进行问责。媒体――包括而且越来越多的是新的在线媒体——可以作为我们的眼睛和耳朵。我们都受益于媒体所提供的信息。
